SOCIAL STUDIES

We will have a test on Friday, Feb. 10th.  Students may use their journals for the test.  Study guides were handed out today and we have begun to complete them as a class.  Please remind your child to read over the chapter and review the questions before the test.

MATH

We are currently working on exponents and factorization.  There will be a test on Chapter 14 on Tuesday, Feb. 14.   Study guides will be completed and sent home on Friday.  We are also reviewing all the math concepts we have studied so far this year.

COMMUNICATION ARTS

We have completed our pen pal letters and are patiently waiting for return letters.  Please remind your child to send them in once they are received.  The other students are very anxious to hear from any and all foreign pen pals.
We are also working on writing 'thank you' letters to the Crestwood Rotary Club for the D.A.R.E. t-shirts and a letter to Mrs. Marcinkiewicz for counselor's week.
Please remind your child to continue working on their reading logs.

MATH
We are reviewing for the test on Chapters 9 & 11 today.  Students have done a nice job on multiplying and dividing decimals, however often forget to put the decimal in the answer.  We will continue to work on this.
Our next chapter is on equations and expressions.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We have spent the past week working on our colony journals.  The students were asked to choose a colony and write either a 5 paragraph letter to someone in England or write 3 journal entries about what life was like in the early colonies.  Students have had numerous class periods to work on this, however, some may need to finalize their final copies tonight.  I would like to share these tomorrow.

LANGUAGE ARTS
The class has selected their pen pal countries and I have sent off the order.  As soon as they come in, we will begin our letters to our foreign pen pals.  The cost for the pen pal is $1.00.  If you could send that in with your child to help cover the cost, it would be greatly appreciated.

We have the Library nooks for the week.  We will be practicing our summarizing while reading from the Nooks.  If your child has one at home and you feel comfortable sending it in, they are more than welcome to bring it to use.  Unfortunately, we are not responsible should anything happen to any electronic device sent in from home.

PRISM

PRISM IS A 5TH GRADE SCIENCE REQUIREMENT!

Fifth grade students will be taking the MAP test in science this year. The MAP test follows the scientific inquiry approach. A prism project pertaining to an investigation (an experiment answering a scientific question using the scientific method) is an excellent opportunity to further enhance a student's understanding of inquiry science. Therefore, all 5th graders will be required to do a prism project using the investigation format. All students have received their Prism booklet. This booklet should be brought home and used as your guide. Pages 8, 9 and 10 contain the criteria for the investigation.
Below are the steps of the Scientific Method along with all three variables which must be identified and labeled on the project.

                                                                     The Scientific Method

1. Ask a Question- Your question is the basis for the investigation.
2. Research- Find out as much about the topic as you can.
3. Hypothesis- Predict the answer to your question.
4. Experiment- Design a test to confirm or disprove your hypothesis.
5. Analysis- Record what happened during the experiment.
6. Conclusion- Tell the results of your experiment and mention whether your hypothesis was right or wrong.

                                                                      Variables Simplified

Variables are an important aspect of any scientific investigation. All Prism investigations must identify the variables in the experiment. Here is a simple way to identify those variables.

-Controlled Variables are the portion of any experiment that remains the same.

- Independent Variable is the portion of an experiment that is being changed each time the experiment is conducted.

- Dependent Variables are measured and/or recorded results of those changes. (data collected on charts, graphs, etc.)

**  THE 5TH GRADE TYPICALLY GIVES A GIFT TO OFFICER KELLY (our DARE officer).  WE ARE ASKING THAT EACH 5TH GRADER DONATE $1.OO or $2.00 TO PUT TOWARDS HER GIFT.  THIS WILL BE PRESENTED TO HER DURING GRADUATION.

FUN WITH OUR SECOND GRADE BUDDIES

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Good Morning and Happy Holidays!!!

With Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas break just ahead, we are very busy.

Math:  We are just finishing multiplication of decimals.  Starting tomorrow we will be looking at division.  The only way to master this concept is by practicing (a lot!).

Social Studies:  We are looking back at the origin of the thirteen colonies.  Many of the boys are anticipated The Revolutionary War, however, we must first look at how the colonies got their start and why they became disgruntled.  Students will be making a journal as if they were a child during this time period.  They will choose either the New England colonies, the middle colonies, or the southern colonies as their home and explain what their life was like.  More details will follow.

Communication Arts:  We will begin our descriptive writing at the end of the week.  Students will choose a picture and create a story to go along with that picture.  We have concluded our study on character and will begin discussing settings.

Dates to remember:

Thursday, December 1 - Character Choir
Saturday, December 3 -  Breakfast with Santa
Wednesday, December 7 - Early Release (1:40)
Thursday, December 15 - Winter Program for 4th and 5th grade (1:30)
Friday, December 16 - Second quarter ends; Classroom parties (2:00)
December 19 - January 3 - Winter break

**  Just a gentle reminder that the weather has turned cold and students should bring the appropriate attire.
**  If you are looking for stocking stuffers, think about new school supplies.  Many students are finding they are out of lead for their pencils, glue, and other supplies

QUOTE CORNER:

"A teacher is better than two books." - German Proverb

I chose this quote because I have the best teacher ever (and I don't have to read).  Johnny Maddock

"You may be on the right track, but if you just sit there you'll get run over."  - Paul H. Dunn

I think this means that you shouldn't give up on what you're doing.  Brady Lange

Thursday, November 17

Communication Arts:  Students are doing a great with their MAP prep reading packets (ie:  The Lost Colony, Ben Franklin).  The next one is due on Tuesday, November 22nd.  We will not have one over Thanksgiving break.

Camp Wyman stories are in and are looking great!

Math:  We are learning about multiplying decimals and it is so much fun!!!  Actually, the students are doing surprisingly well.

Social Studies:  We are currently learning about the Early Explorers into North America.  We will have an open book test on Tuesday, November 22nd.  We are working on outlining chapters and taking notes from a text book.  Students should be familiar with Chapter 4 before they try to take the test.

No spelling next week and no reading logs next week!!

"Quote Corner"

"One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men.
No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man."          Elbert Hubbard

This quote means to me that one man can achieve any goal if he believes in himself.
Mikey Carroll.

"Never lose a chance of saying a kind word."  William Makepeace Thackeray

I choose this quote because it's like not saying sorry when you are supposed to. Also if you like someones shirt you should be kind and say "I like your shirt" before you lose your chance.

"Quote Corner" -  "If we are to have real peace, we must begin with the children." - Mahatma Gandhi

I like this quote because some of the children in our class don't have peace. I am trying to have them stop. I also LOVE peace and quiet!

Meredith Kennedy

" Nothing is impossible to a willing heart"- John Heywood

The reason I picked this quote is if there isn't anyone motivate you no one will ever get their goal. That is why I love Bob from Biggest Loser! Also I love to motivate people that are trying to get to their goal. I can't wait until I get to motivate again!
